Federal Mirrors are fabulous! I found this description: Our nation’s early years, when the Federalist Party led the American government between 1790 and 1828, generally defines the Federal period. During this time, a strong sense of nationalism was born. Thomas Jefferson and other government leaders looked to the classical past of Greece and Italy for inspiration in forging the identity of the new American democratic Republic. The convex shape of these mirrors helped to illuminate the room when accompanied by candles.

Further description of convex mirrors: Glass mirrors were first produced during the third century A.D., and were quite common in Egypt, Gaul, Germany and Asia. The invention of glassblowing method during the 14th century led to the discovery of convex mirrors, which increased the popularity of glass mirrors.

I think my love of Federal Mirrors is three-fold: it’s a mirror, the eagle and the convex shape of the glass. A winning combination! I recently added a Federal Mirror to the permanent collection here at the Chalet. I purchased from my friend Michele Wesdock of Emma & Jean Studio.
